The Knighthawks of VFA 136 were established flying the F/A-18 Hornet in July 1985 at NAS Lemoore, California In February 1986 they received permanent change of station orders for Cecil Field.

The Knighthawks count among their many accomplishments winning the Fox-1 Award in 1988. This award is given annually by COMNAVAIRLANT to the squadron that grades the highest in missile shoots and represents air-to-air excellence.

The Knighthawks proved their air-to-ground prowess the following year by winning the 1989 Silver Bomb Award. This award represents strike excellence based on competitive bombing exercises. The field included all east coast Navy F/A-18 Hornet and A-7 squadrons.

While assigned to the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Knighthawks were among the first U.S. units to deploy to the Red Sea in support of Operation Desert Shield. They also had the distinction of deploying off the coast of France and England in honor of the 50th Anniversary of the D-Day Invasion while assigned to the USS George Washington.
